Installation recommendations for ASSY screws
Installing 8 mm ASSY screws
Lower density timbers (Spruce-Pine-Fir and Northern Species)
-No pre drilling required for d = 8 mm screws up to 580 mm length
Higher density timbers (Hem-Fir, D-Fir-Larch)
-No pre drilling required for d = 8 mm screws up to 480 mm length
-Pre drilling suggested for d = 8 mm and l > 480 mm
Pre drill with ≈ 0.7*d (5.5 mm or 3/16”) for 20% of screw length
Old growth timbers and aged wood (Douglas Fir and Hemlock)
-No pre drilling required for d = 8 mm screws up to 400 mm length
-Pre drilling suggested for d = 8 mm and l > 400 mm
Pre drill with ≈ 0.7*d (5.5 mm or 3/16”) for 25% of screw length
Engineered wood products (LVL, PSL)
-No pre drilling required for d = 8 mm screws up to 340 mm length
-Pre drilling suggested for d = 8 mm and l > 340 mm
Pre drill with ≈ 0.7*d (5.5 mm or 3/16”) for 25% of screw length
Suggested Machinery
-Use low rpm drill with high torque
-Do not use impact drills
-Use AW drive bits for all ASSY screws
-Use drill with torque clutch
During installation
-Do not stop drill during installation. ASSY screws shall be installed without stopping in one run
-Wear safety glasses and safety gear
-Secure stand on solid ground is required
-Use drill with clutch when installing screws in steel to wood connections. Sudden torque increase may cause injuries if no proper torque regulating drill with clutch is used!
Note:
d= screw diameter in mm
l = screw length in mm
Pre drilling may reduce withdrawal capacity of screw. Consult with structural engineer before pre-drilling.

Cross Laminated Timber Seismic Testing by Marjan Popovski Ph.D., P.Eng with FPInnovations
Marjan Popvski said, "Full-scale testing of the seismic performance of two storey CLT house is currently underway at FPInnovations. The house was built using steel brackets, nails and screws. Details and results to come next year."
Log & Timber Connections is proud to have donated ASSY Structural Screws for some of the connections. We look forward to Dr. Popovski's results.
